Executive Director’s Report: Your Chamber in Action
Greetings and best wishes for a happy, safe, relaxing and turkey-filled Thanksgiving from both Jen and myself. The office will close on Wednesday, November 23 at 3:00 and reopen on Monday, November 28. I will be out of the office all next week; Jen; however, will be in.
The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors was held on Thursday. It was a lively and robust conversation covering major discussion items that the Board is exploring as it begins its 2017 planning.
The following is our attempt to gather information from membership and to be responsive to that information in 2017 program planning.
A “think tank” roundtable was held in early November wherein certain community leaders were invited to the table for open discussions on the current and future status of the Chamber. Many meaningful and challenging ideas came out of that roundtable; all of which will be compiled and discussed further at the December Special Board meeting. It was agreed that the roundtable participants will gather again in three months to revisit those discussion items.
In conjunction with the roundtable, the Chamber created member-only survey seeking input on the relevancy of the Chamber and its work. The response has been tremendous and the input has been candid. It has been emailed to all members that have an email on file with the Chamber. We have also mailed hardcopies of the survey as well – just in case the email was missed or sent to your spam folder. If you are so inclined, please share either the link or the hardcopy with your colleagues.
Annual Membership Dinner and Celebration:
The Board voted to separate the annual member meeting and the Annual Membership Dinner and Celebration Event. This is an exceptionally good idea, allowing Chamber business to be conducted in a proper manner while encouraging its membership to fully participate and to be fully engaged and informed.
The membership meeting will be held in mid-January at Town and Country Resort, Stowe. Members in good standing will meet and be presented with a slate of officers and the 2017 budget and program of work will be explained. Those gathered will hear reports from the executive director, board chairman and committee chairpersons. There will be a question and answer session. The business portion of the evening shouldn’t take more than an hour, after which attendees can return to socializing and networking.
The annual dinner and celebration will be held in March at Stoweflake Resort and Spa. It will feature a cash bar, silent/live auction, awards presentation and a grand celebration of the Chambers accomplishments over the past year. It will be a unique opportunity to network, interact, engage and do business with 150ish business, community members and leaders and political figures.
Jointly Sponsored Forum: Mandatory Sick Leave and Overtime Eligibility
These two topics were the subjects of a dynamic seminar co-sponsored by the Lamoille Region Chamber of Commerce, Lamoille Economic Development Council, and the Stowe Area Association.
It was held earlier this week at the Green Mountain Inn in Stowe. An estimated 50 people attended. Your Chamber has handouts addressing both these regulations as well as a document that provides Guidance for Non-Profit Organizations on Paying Overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Stop in or call for your copy. These laws will, undoubtedly, have an impact on your business.
Chamber Committee Reports:
Nominating Committee: This is an appointed committee and it will begin its work at a meeting to be held on November 29th. Its charge is to develop a slate of officers for the coming year and to recruit potential Directors to fill the seats of three directors whose terms are up in February 2017. If you have interest in being considered to serve on the Chamber Board of Directors, give Adam Lory, Chairman of the Board (802-888-0486), or Max Neal, Interim Executive Director, (802-888-7607) a call stating your interest.
A Call to Join a Committee:
Marketing and Branding, Membership and Events are all busy studying, tweaking, creating, and providing guidance to the Chamber staff. Committees are open to Chamber membership. All members are encouraged to join a Committee and become part of the process. Just let us know your interest by calling the Chamber office at 802-888-7607.

Save the date and plan to join us for the fun at Sushi Yoshi. If you haven’t visited the restaurant, I encourage you to do so… You won’t be disappointed. The Stowe Area Association was asked to co-sponsor this mixer, but declined because it has its own December mixer booked. We will work closely in 2017 to setup co-sponsored mixers.
